CranioSacral therapy is a treatment that uses a light touch approach to release tensions held deep in the body tissues, and in doing so relieves pain and improves function on all levels in the body.
CranioSacral therapy centres on the association between the cranium and the sacrum, which have been technically established to work together to pump cerebrospinal fluid throughout the body. Any unknown interruption of this mechanism can result in many health problems.
Cerebro-spinal fluid (CSF) affects the central nervous system (CNS) which encompasses the brain and spinal cord. CSF is contained within a semi closed hydraulic system, which is contained within a tough waterproof membrane called the dura mater.
When it is working properly, there is a rhythmic pressure fluctuation that can be likened to the respiratory or breathing rhythm or indeed the cardiac pulse or rhythm. Once this goes wrong the body can no longer regulate the pressure and the nervous system is then put under stress or is compromised. The CNS is responsible for 90% of all neurological modulation in the body so a disturbance here has far reaching consequences.
This is where CranioSacral therapy works - to balance out the pressure and where possible, correct the cause of the pressure change and in doing so potentially addresses further complications.
CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a light touch approach that can produce a sense of well-being. Using a gentle touch starting with about the weight of a small coin, practitioners use distinctive light touch techniques. CST enhances your feeling of wellbeing. It allows the body’s self-regulating system to work so that the treatment can effectively be used as a starting point for the body to rectify a lot of things that may be askew.
In connection with Somato Emotional Release, it also works on the connections between the emotional state of the body and the physical, thereby releasing underlying emotional trauma that may be attributing to other problems. CranioSacral therapy helps to restore your rhythm and, in compromised areas, allows for healing to take place of sensory, motor, musculoskeletal, neurological disorders, symptoms, conditions and pain and because it's so gentle, CST can be effective for all ages.
A typical CranioSacral Therapy session takes place in a quiet, private setting. You remain fully clothed as you relax on a comfortable, padded table.
Your therapist begins by gently touching various parts of your body and delicate manual techniques are then used.
A CST session can last up to an hour or more. It can be used alone or integrated with other therapies.
What you experience from your own session is highly individual. The sessions are generally deeply relaxing, creating feelings of warmth or gentle pulsing in the areas that the therapist is working on.
